My sock yarn line is High Society Sock Yarn because it will make your socks look like a million bucks!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03929485857099153805noreply@blogger.comBlogger114125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-399668559457523030.post-35580786890448162252015-02-11T19:55:00.003-05:002015-03-08T20:16:18.416-04:00March Madness Moving SaleI have only been dying yarn once a year for the past couple of years due to time and space constraints and for that one time of year (Balticon) I've been using this website for order/sales info. So, I've been thinking that I want to close the doors on my Etsy shop. Well, I now have another reason to stop procrastinating the cleaning out of the closet that holds what remains of my inventory... I'm moving at the end of the summer. So, I'll be having a sale designed to get the last of my hand dyed yarn and fiber outta here.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Mark the third week of March on your calendar. The sale will start at 00:01 on Monday, March 16th with everything 20% off. Every day that week, the percentage off will go up until everything is 70% off on Saturday, March 21st and Sunday, March 22nd. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The longer you wait to order, the higher the discount. But if you wait too long, what you want may be gone...</div>

He creates characters that are so wonderfully complex yet seemingly simple; characters with subtle layers, with a richness yet a simplicity , about them.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;">Tanyth is my favorite. She is of the earth, browns and greens. There is a quiet strength to her and a spark as well (burgundy and gold). She is older and wiser with a gift of magic.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;">So for this yarn I didn't use a diagram. I made a list of dye colors I wanted to use and used a more primitive and random method of applying the dye. I let the yarn tell me what it wanted to be. And the results are pretty spectacular.</span></div>

<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;">When I started creating the Balticon colorways in 2010 I imposed some rules on myself. The big one being that I could only dye colorways based on the books or podcasts of someone who is going to be at the con itself.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;">This can pose a problem in that I have to wait until I know someone is planning on attending before I can base a colorway off of their work.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;">In 2011 I started reading The Antithesis Progression series of books by J. Daniel Sawyer and was immediately captivated by the character, Cassie. At times she is known as the Green Lady (for wearing a striking Green outfit) and also as the Dragon Lady.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;">In 2012 I wrote Dragon Lady on a list of potential colorways along with the colors red, purple, and green in parenthesis. Well, in both 2012 and 2013 Dan wasn't able to attend. So Dragon Lady was just a name on a list.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px;">Finally, this year Dan will be there again so I got to do a Dragon Lady colorway. But when I thought about Cassie the color that sprang to mind was red. So instead of being predominantly green with accents of red and purple, she ended up being red with accents of green and purple. I find it interesting that it was the red that struck with me most when she was really much better known for (and even called) the Green Lady. </span></div>

Ginnie is the main character in a series of middle grade sci-fi space opera books by Scott Roche. The brown and yellow are her no-nonsense coveralls that she wears aboard her father's space ship and the pinks are for the girl underneath. I know this is a very short description, but it's a very simple yet strikingly beautiful colorway...much like the character. Besides, I think brown and pink is quite possibly one of my all-time favorite color combinations.</div>

<div>
First, I should say that I designed this with Justin, Terry, and Paul in mind. I know Scott is there instead of Justin now but for me, DRS will always be synonymous with Justin. Besides, Scott's series "Ginnie Dare" got its own colorway so I'm sure he'll understand.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I started with black and silver grey. Both good colors when dealing with robots, dead or otherwise. Then I added gunmetal blue. This is a serious podcast about a sometimes serious subject so I wanted those kinds of colors. But it needed some spark. Accents based on the individual personalities and the stories they write.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Paul was easy...crimson. That's his favorite way to describe red and I'm pretty sure it's in every story he's ever written. Terry was easy too...pink. For all the erotica he's written over the years I went straight to pink. Okay, so now I've got a splash of red and a splash of pink. What to do for Justin? Green. Emerald green. For Still Water.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The final question was placement. So, I paired up colors, one major with one accent and put them across from each other; black and crimson, gunmetal and pink, and silver with green. The result is a very dignified and orderly series of stripes that build a story interrupted by moments of insanity. Sounds like a perfect fit.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And Justin, it's been a while... (sorry, if you've listened to this podcast you get the joke)</div>

<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This colorway was the easiest to design in that the colors were already chosen for me by Jim Henson himself. Mahna Mahna is one of his earliest creations so all I needed to do was google a picture. And yet, technically, this was the most difficult to dye. The only real color choice I had was between Kelly and Chartreuse for the green. The challenge was to keep the green, pink, and orange clean from the purple.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After deciding on the dye colors, I then have to figure out placement. I decided that while i wanted the purple to be the dominant color, I didn't want all of the other colors to be lumped together so I alternated between one of them with the purple. I can see the swirl of the colors in the swatch but it also has plenty of randomness in the way it knit up.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That is until I decided to use it as the heel for the first Balticon sock...I've never had colors line up the way these did. This completely blew me away. It's easily the coolest happy accident I've ever had with a colorway.</div>

I think it was The All-Pro but I could be mistaken. Anyway, it was a passing reference to the team colors, and how the fans wore them, of the D'Kow War Dogs. Their team colors are orange, purple, and lime green. And the description was that they were the most obnoxious colors in all of the Galactic Football League (or words to that effect).<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When I heard this I had to stop the playback and listen again to make sure I'd heard him correctly. That is, after I got done waving off the raised-eyebrow-looks I got from my coworkers because I had laughed (or possibly snorted) out loud. I mean, orange and purple and lime green are obnoxious? Really? Sounds kinda sedate compared to some of the color combinations I've been known to do. Yep, that was the right combo...orange, purple, and lime green. Sounded kinda like a dare of sorts to me.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
How could I <i>NOT</i> create War Dogs after that kind of experience listening to a podcast? I rarely back up and listen to something twice...I think I listened to that description at least three times. And laughed harder each time. So, War Dogs was actually one of the first colorways I jotted down for this year, and the one I saved for last. I knew immediatly how I was going to dye it to get the biggest possible spiraling stripes of each color. And I knew it would make me smile. So, I saved the best for last.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I love the ways that Scott includes so many color descriptions in his stories. Especially when it's related to the<a href="http://scottsigler.com/gfl" target="_blank"> GFL teams</a>, their colors, fans, and venues. You can find a picture of the team logo<a href="http://siglerpedia.scottsigler.com/wiki/index.php/D%27Kow_War_Dogs" target="_blank"> here</a> and all of Scott's books and things <a href="http://scottsigler.com/products" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>

Now, her story is the final story of the soon to be released <a href="http://shadowpublications.com/?q=content/garaagas-children" target="_blank">Garaaga's Children: Ancients. </a><br />

I love this character: her determination to be different than her mother, her belief in love, her strength, and how she struggles to balance who she is as a person with who she is as one of Garaaga's Children.</div>

<div>
The colors of Ama are the blue for the lapis that helps protect her love, green for another creature she encounters, black that is also for another creature as well as her mother, and crimson for Garaaga...and blood...</div>

The first,<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Never-Ends-Jhada-Rogue-Addams/dp/1424342724/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367777451&sr=8-1&keywords=jhada+addams" target="_blank"> It Never Ends</a>, is available now; and the second, Devil's Gambit, is due to be released in the near future.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also had the pleasure of meeting Jhada face-to-face at Balticon last year and am looking forward to spending time with her again this year.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This series of books raises interesting questions about judgement and vengeance. What would you do or give to get out of a horrible situation? Who gets to pass judgement? What happens when the victimizer becomes the victim? What is the nature of the soul or the afterlife? This is fantasy (vampires, werewolves, gargoyles, a selkie, other assorted demons, and some voodoo too) mixed with some horror and erotica. They are stories of hunting and being hunted; of romance and redemption.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I don't want to give away any spoilers as to why this yarn is the colors it is...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Suffice it to say she (the yarn that is) is indigo and black with a streak of white...</div>

First, it's not just a project that's already been done, it's a future project as well. It is a shared world anthology that has already been written, edited, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Walk-The-Fire-ebook/dp/B009GQYF6E" target="_blank">published</a>, and <a href="http://johnmierau.wordpress.com/tag/walk-the-fire/" target="_blank">podcast</a>. And yet, it's also a <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1325849873/walk-the-fire-a-shared-world-sf-anthology-series" target="_blank">KickStarter project</a> for a second volume. It is a shared world with a simple premise...a world created by author, podcaster, and voice actor<a href="http://johnmierau.wordpress.com/category/ebooks/" target="_blank"> John Mierau.</a> He has invited other writers to join him in creating stories for this world.<br />

They are alchemists of the modern age.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This podcast is actually two in one. Dave and Brion first sit down with the guest host for 20 ish minutes and talk about that author's background, their books and projects, how they got to where they are, and how they work. These episodes are my favorites. Mostly because I only listen to podcasts when I'm at work and these are easier to follow then the back and forth of the workshopping episodes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
With either type of episode, I've found that I can only listen to one or two at a time because they provide SO many ideas and insights into my own creativity. I end up with a train of post-it notes of things I need to remember, need to think about, need to explore, and need to do every time I listen.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Listening to Dave and Brion and the amazing collection of awesome people who have been their guest hosts and workshop writers has made me believe in the power of my own creativity. They've made me take myself more seriously as an artist regardless of what I'm working on (poems, prose, or even yarn). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had the pleasure of meeting Dave for the first time at Balticon last year. He is an enthusiastic supporter of all creatives, a terrific voice talent and actor, and simply one of the nicest individuals on the planet.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sadly, Dave will not be able to make it to Balticon this year as originally planned. An explanation of that and the podcast being on an indefinite hiatus is <a href="http://www.roundtablepodcast.com/2013/04/indefinite-hiatus/" target="_blank">here</a>. My heart goes out to him and his family. I wish him and his family health, healing, and happiness. He will be greatly missed this year and I look forward to seeing him next year.</div>

Each year as I get ready to dye the Balticon Colorways, I look at the notes I've made during the year on stories, podcasts, and websites that have made an impression on me during the year, and think about who will be at Balticon this year. I try to find a new angle or technique each year either in the way I dye the yarn itself using different patterns for applying the dye, or what types of things I use for inspiration. In the past, I've used primarily podcasts, a few books that weren't podcast, and some websites. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This year, when I thought about who would be there, and who was making contributions to the community that weren't necessarily in the form of just a podcast or website, <a href="http://www.voicesbyveronica.com/index.php/about/" target="_blank">Veronica Giguere</a> came immediately to mind. She has been involved in the Secret World Chronicle podcast from the beginning, first as "just" the voice actor to eventually stepping up as a writer as well. She has not only a phenominal voice, but more importantly, a fearlessness about creating a full spectrum of voices to bring characters to life.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
She has been narrating audiobooks as well (15+ and counting). Audiobooks are a great way to "read" books when you don't have time to sit down and read by listening as you do other chores or on your daily commute. There are links to her projects <a href="http://www.voicesbyveronica.com/index.php/projects/" target="_blank">HERE</a>. Please take a moment to check out her work. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
She is smart, talented, funny, and sexy. She is bubblegum pink, hot fuchsia, and purple. The purple is actually a combination of not just purple, but turquoise added to the pinks...one of my favorite ways to create a unique purple that depends on the pink itself and how much it is twisted by the color that I prefer to think of as sass... seems so appropriate for the purple of Veronica. </div>

<br /></div>
<div>
I don't want to bore you all with any long sob stories. So I'll try to keep it short and tear free...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The short version is that while I still love creating hand dyed yarn, I don't have the space, time, or to be honest, the desire to do it much at all anymore. My Etsy shop has been closed (for all intents and purposes since I pulled all the stock) for a year now. I still have a few skeins taking up space here that I should list and get rid of...if only to free up the space and make a few dollars.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That said, Balticon is so very special to me. And, the Balticon Colorways even more so because they represent my two creative loves (yarn and words) colliding and resulting in something unique. Balticon is my one special weekend each year. It's a chance to see friends from all over the country, be surrounded by creative people who understand not just me but the challenges I face creatively, and to spend a long weekend focusing just on creativity. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I started dying these colorways as a way to pull together my love of the stories and podcasts that are created by those friends I see at Balticon each year with my love of yarn and color. I experience life in color...feelings are colors, characters are colors, words and stories evoke colors. I love translating things I read or listen to into colorways. To take one piece of art and use it as inspiration for a raw material that someone else will then turn into their own piece of art is a beautiful cycle.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have since turned these yarns that are created in honor of the people and stories that make up Balticon into the way I pay for the privilege of attending each year. So, they serve a purpose besides just being pretty. The proceeds from the sales of the Balticon Colorways is how I can afford to attend. The only way I can afford to attend.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, I would like to say, in advance, to anyone who purchases these yarns, a sincere and heartfelt thank you. I hope they bring you hours of knitting enjoyment followed by years of joy as you use whatever you create. They are truly a labor of love.</div>

<span style="color: blue; font-size: large; font-weight: bold;">--May 1, 2013--Update: Just 4 skeins remaining!</span></div>
</div>
<span style="color: red;"><b><br /></b></span>
It's that time of year again! Balticon is almost here...time to dye the Limited Edition Balticon Colorways for this year. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But first, I had this colorway that I've been dyeing to create (see what I did there?). And amid starting to work on the Balticon colors I decided it was time...because when you are up against a deadline is always the best time to do an extra project at the same time. Right?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In case you can't tell from the colorways I've produced in the past, my favorite colors are pink, purple, red, and turquoise. So, I'm not really sure where the idea to do a peacock inspired colorway came from, but it's been burning a hole in my brain for a while now. If you follow me on Pinterest you'll see a number of peacock images that I used for inspiration.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wanted to have the rich, deep blue of the body and head combined with the colors of the tail. At first, I was going to design the skein so that it was more than half deep blue and then put the tail colors all together. But, doing that would have meant that it striped every other row dark blue with the other colors sort of spiraling in the rows in between. And, I may end up doing another version of these colors like that sometime in the future, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted this first time out.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What I really wanted was spirals of the rich blue alternating with the tail colors. I used a sapphire blue, teal, turquoise, yellow-green, and a steel blue-grey.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What I got was the following:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="color: purple;"><u>There are currently (as of 5/27/12) 2 skeins of Street left</u></span></div>
<br />
This colorway was completely unplanned. Unlike, Secret Lair, that came to me as a gentle revelation; Street hit me like a lightning bolt. That wonderful moment of inspiration when you get the whole picture of something is one complete flash. I was absolutely giddy by it. This didn't require any thought, any work, any worry. And, after agonizing over every decision for Quyth this was a welcome relief. <script type="text/javascript">
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
</script>

try {
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-13111057-1");
pageTracker._trackPageview();
} catch(err) {}
</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Quyth and Street were the last two yarns and I dyed them on the same night. Quyth was all about planning and precision. It was really hard work. Street was like telling a two year old to finger-paint. It was the ice cold beer on a hot summer day.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had originally planned to do a colorway based on Paul E. Cooley's Garaaga's Children series. I wanted to explore the ancient landscape and all who lived there and then. That meant dark. I couldn't do another dark yarn. Not now. I needed more bright, light, and playful to balance things out. Quyth does a wonderful job of that but I needed another one. I needed humor. And that's when Oscar bitch-slapped me.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We are all capable of that evil giggle...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was dancing when I created this colorway. It is a little twisted (it has to be if it's inspired by The Street collection), but it's also irreverent, smart-assed, cocky, and balls-to-the-wall fun. I hope you enjoy knitting with it even half as much as I enjoyed creating it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is green for Oscar (and the fraggles), yellow for Big and Bird, red for Elmo, and blue for Cookie.</div>

<span style="color: purple;"><u>Eye of the Quyth is SOLD OUT</u></span></div>
<br />
Like Whelkies, Eye of the Quyth is not named for a specific book, podcast, or website. It is the strangest in terms of the inspiration and was by far the most difficult colorway I've ever attempted.<script type="text/javascript">
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
</script>
<script type="text/javascript">
try {
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-13111057-1");
pageTracker._trackPageview();
} catch(err) {}
</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had the idea for this colorway months ago. Originally it was just black, purple, orange, yellow, and hot pink. I kinda had an idea of how I was gonna pull it off. Kinda. Sorta.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For the two of you who haven't read or listened to Scott Sigler's Galactic Football League of stories the coach of Quentin Barnes' team is a Quyth. The Quyth have one eye and it changes color based on their emotions. I can relate on a human scale...my eyes are technically blue (a pale baby blue with a dark rim to be specific) but they can appear grey, green, or a bright turquoise depending on my mood, the lighting, or my clothing. So, eyes that become really cool colors like hot pink, yellow, orange... well, I couldn't pass up trying to create a colorway based on that.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It turns out there are something like 17 different colors (or more) that a Quyth eye can be...or there are at least that many ways that Sigler has describe their eye color.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I started with the premise that the normal color is black. I wanted that to be a predominant color. Then, I decided to let the colors mixing on the skein provide the shading some colors like blue and red needed. Rather than make half the skein black and half the other colors (which would have been a hell of a lot easier), I didn't want the black lining up against everything all the time while it was being knitted. I wanted to at least give the other colors a shot at standing out on their own.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I divided the skein into quarters (a common way for me to decide what to place where on the skein). And then it got crazy... I further divided each quarter into thirds. So, I had a cool dozen mapped out around the skein. I've done ten before and vowed I wouldn't do more than eight ever again... Yeah, right. This was inspired by Sigler...I already knew shit was gonna get crazy.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The result is a wild and crazy colorway with yellow, orange, red, green, hot pink, purple, blue, and black. There are various shade of everything which gives it a depth to go with the brightness. All of the colorways up to this point have been very masculine and rather dark. There's nothing wrong with that, but I really wanted to do something that was crazy, fun, bright, and cool. Ta Da!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can see all of the colorways, with links to the original work and the artists/podcasters/websites that inspired them, on the <a href="http://dyedbrighthere.blogspot.com/p/balticon-2012.html" target="_blank">Balticon 2012 page</a>.

<u><span style="color: red;">Secret Lair is SOLD OUT! Thank you to all who purchased a skein.</span></u></div>
<br />
I've know Chris Miller and Dr. John Cmar for a little while now; even met John at Balticon last year. Chris is the "Overlord" at The Secret Lair website and podcast and along with John, David Moore, Natalie Metzger, and various contributors they inform and entertain about all things geeky and cool in a grown-up (well, most of the time) way.<script type="text/javascript">
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));

try {
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-13111057-1");
pageTracker._trackPageview();
} catch(err) {}
</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My first impression of the podcast and website was the color blue with bits of brown. Sometimes I experience things in color. It's hard to explain but this was one of those times. So, I asked Chris what his favorite color was and when he said, "Deep blue. The color of the light just before sunrise.", I knew I was onto something good.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Balticon colorways are Limited Editions. What that means is they will never EVER be done again. It finally occurred to me that I can take advantage of that fact and create colorways that would be difficult to ever do again. So, like Whelkies, I used a method of dye application that is completely random instead of my trademark patterning. So, each of the skeins of Secret Lair is a little different...much like the various personalities who comprise the whole group endeavor that is The Secret Lair.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wanted the finished result to be that color that Chris loves but I wanted to build layers underneath it that would give it depth, texture. So, I actually started with turquoise and brilliant blue. Over and next to that went royal blue. Finally, I put brown at specific intervals to give it some structure and followed that up with gunmetal blue and navy. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The result is a colorway with sweetness, soul, and a little bit of attitude that immediately feels like an old friend. Welcome to The Secret Lair.</div>

<span style="color: purple;"><u>There are currently (as of 5/27/12) 2 skeins left of Very Scary Art</u></span></div>
<br />
Very Scary Art is a website run by my good friends, Helen and Mich. Here is what this site is about (and yes, I stole the following from the site itself)...<script type="text/javascript">
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
</script>
<script type="text/javascript">
try {
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-13111057-1");
pageTracker._trackPageview();
} catch(err) {}
</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">

<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: purple;">On October 30th, 2010, Helen and Mich attended <a href="http://www.rallytorestoresanity.com/" style="text-decoration: none;" target="_blank" title="Rally to Restore Sanity">the Rally to Restore Sanity</a> and <a href="http://www.keepfearalive.com/" style="text-decoration: none;" target="_blank" title="Keep Fear Alive">the March to Keep Fear Alive</a>, hosted by Jon Stewart of <em><a href="http://www.thedailyshow.com/" style="text-decoration: none;" target="_blank" title="The Daily Show">The Daily Show</a></em> and Stephen Colbert of <em><a href="http://www.colbertnation.com/home" style="text-decoration: none;" target="_blank" title="Colbert Report">The Colbert Report</a></em>. One of the charities benefiting from the rally was <a href="http://www.donorschoose.org/" style="text-decoration: none;" target="_blank" title="DonorsChoose.org">DonorsChoose.org</a>, an online charity that lets people help classrooms in need. To say thank you for the donations raised, children drew pictures of their greatest fears and DonorsChoose.org handed these drawings out at the rally. At the end of the day, they still had over 500 drawings left and no way to get them home. That’s where we come in.</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: purple;">Helen and Mich couldn’t stand to see all those wonderful drawings end up in the recycling bin, so we took them home. After contacting DonorsChoose.org, we decided to set up this website where we could showcase all the drawings we got from the rally. At least once a week, we plan to post a drawing and then write about what we like about it and why we think it’s very scary. We have some truly amazing works of art to show you, and we hope you’ll take time to comment on them.</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white;">The drawings are wonderful! I wanted to dye yarn in a complete rainbow of colors. When I started </span>pondering how to do that and realizing that my colorway "Childhood" was already pretty much a rainbow, I looked for a way to make it different. So, whereas Childhood has turquoise and fuchsia, I wanted this to be darker. After all, this is about stuff that scares us... So, it needed to be darker. And, while the entire rainbow is present in this yarn, I applied the colors from darkest (blue) to lightest (yellow) so the areas of overlap are not very noticeable as overlap. I only used primary colors directly, the secondary colors (purple, orange, and green) are the result of the overlaps. So, while they are there, they are relatively small.<br />
<br />
The patterning was the second issue I had to deal with here and I am thrilled at how it came out. Much like the childrens' drawings the intent was to represent something scary and the result is rather charming.<br />
<br />

<span style="color: red;"><u>Whelkies is SOLD OUT! Thank you to all who have made this possible.</u></span></div>
<br />
Nathan Lowell wrote a series of books... I had heard of them. Heard people raving about them. Seen tweets... By the time I got around to listening to them, all six were out. And, it's a good thing, because I couldn't get enough of them. I was able to listen for 8 hrs a day at work...and that wasn't enough. <script type="text/javascript">
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
</script>
<script type="text/javascript">
try {
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-13111057-1");
pageTracker._trackPageview();
} catch(err) {}
</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One of the things that struck me the most from these stories was the whelkies. These are hand carved wooden figurines of animals with a bit of purple shell as the heart of the animal. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wanted to do a colorway to pay homage to this series of stories but for the longest time couldn't get an idea. The stories take place on various trading ships or ports on distant planets and space stations. The only color reference I could remember was the sapphire eye color of one character. And then I remembered the whelkies and knew instantly that was the colorway. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, when I dyed the yarn for this colorway, I didn't apply the dye uniformly to all the skeins. Whelkies are all unique. So are these skeins of yarn. I put a splash of purple in just one place on each skein to symbolize the purple shell heart. Some are bigger, some are darker. Again, each is different. Each is special. I wanted the browns to streak, swirl, and pool in their own way like the grain of wood. I'm so pleased with the results, I hope you enjoy them too.</div>
<div>

The list of my favorite podcasters includes Jake Bible. Unfortunately, he won't be able to attend Balticon this year so that means I had to put on hold a colorway I had planned to do for the first book in his Apex Trilogy. I have very few rules about anything when it comes to creativity, but the creator of the work that inspires the yarn has to be attending Balticon...otherwise, how could it be a Balticon colorway? <script type="text/javascript">

So, while I'm upset that I won't be able to meet Jake in person this year, his work will still be represented. How's that possible? Well, he also did this really cool project called Stark this year. It's an illustrated novella. Yeah, a novella. Not a graphic novel; though Stark is more than a little graphic. Okay, it's a blood bath. This project reminds me of an adult version of the books we read as kids where every couple of pages there is a full page illustration. WAY cool! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The artist that did the illustrations for Stark is Scott Pond. And guess what? Yep, he'll be at Balticon this year. And, really, it was the illustrations that inspired this colorway more than the story itself. Although, the illustrations are well, illustrating the story... So, I guess I got the inspiration from the work that was inspired by Stark. So, this is a once-removed kind of project I suppose.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Anyway.... Stark lives up to its name. I originally was thinking of just doing black and white with the splashes of red. But I love the silvery quality of Scott's work so I decided to use some of the silver grey too. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I dyed Enemy Lines and Stark in the same session because of the commonalities of their colorways made for less dye mixing if I did them together. I love that they are both so simple and yet complex when knit.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In a black and white world there will always be shades of grey and the inevitable spot of blood...</div>
<div>

<u><span style="color: red;">Enemy Lines is SOLD OUT! Thank you to all who purchased a skein.</span></u></div>
<br />
I have a few favorite authors/podcasters. These are folks who consistently produce stories I enjoy (many of which I've listened to multiple time AND read because they are just that good), and they also keep their podcast feed active with a constant stream of content. The work they put out is not just good writing, it's a quality product on a regular basis...something that takes plenty of talent, sure; but more than that, it takes a lot of dedication and hard work. <script type="text/javascript">
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
</script>
<script type="text/javascript">
try {
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-13111057-1");
pageTracker._trackPageview();
} catch(err) {}
</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first colorway, Enemy Lines, is based on one of these favorites. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Enemy lines is a novel by John Mierau. It is part sci-fi (with space travel, invading aliens, and friendly aliens) and part mystery/espionage thriller. Mystery/espionage thriller type stories have always been among my favorites so I was really excited to listen to this. It didn't disappoint!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was immediately struck by one of the descriptions of the aliens as "the greys". When the mysterious alien "Pusher" starts wreaking havoc with a yellow-green alien slime I knew I had to create a colorway based on this story.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is a very simple colorway that will create some dramatic results in the finished project (much like this fantastic story). It is dark and mysterious, sleek and sophisticated, with a splash of acid green irony and action.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
